Shopify SEO is search engine optimization built specifically around Shopify – its strengths, but also its limitations. In Sweden, people run millions of Google searches every day, and roughly one in ten of them comes from someone who’s ready to buy. If you want your Shopify store to show up at exactly that moment, it needs to be optimised both technically and in terms of content. That’s where we come in: a Swedish SEO agency built for exactly that kind of work.
What is Shopify SEO?
Shopify SEO means directing your SEO improvements at Shopify’s specific features and structure. A Shopify store is built mainly around products and categories (collections), and how well it shows up in Google comes down to how these are structured, linked and described. Shopify SEO therefore covers four areas: technology, content, links and user experience.
What sets it apart from general e-commerce SEO is the detail. Shopify makes a whole series of technical decisions for you – some good, others you can’t change. A Shopify SEO specialist knows which battles are worth fighting, and which ones you solve with a workaround.
What we typically fix in Shopify stores
Shopify is one of the easiest e-commerce platforms to use, but it comes with recurring SEO challenges we see in almost every project:
- A fixed URL structure. Shopify forces products under /products/ and categories under /collections/. You can’t change that – but you can get it right with canonical URLs and internal linking, so the correct version ranks.
- Duplicate product URLs. The same product can be reached through several collection paths, which creates duplicates. Canonical tags usually solve the basics, but internal links still point the wrong way unless you adjust the theme.
- App bloat. Every app adds scripts that slow down load times. Core Web Vitals suffers, and that shows up in rankings. We clean up, measure and prioritise.
- Thin category pages. Collections with no text rarely rank. Category pages are often the biggest untapped potential in a Shopify store.
- Scaling into new languages and markets. Shopify Markets and hreflang only do the right thing once they’re configured correctly.
Who is Shopify SEO for?
Are you using Shopify today, or planning to, with a product database of a decent size? Then you’re a good candidate for Shopify SEO. We work with Swedish online retailers of every size – Sorselestugan, among others, has chosen to work with us on their Shopify store.
How is Shopify SEO done?
Topdog’s Shopify SEO service combines both technical and content-related actions, organised into two phases.
Phase 1. Planning Shopify SEO
Every SEO project involves several people and departments. That’s why we always start with a shared project plan that answers: what needs doing? How? Who’s doing it? When? During planning, we bring in feedback from both the technical team and management – they’re the ones who know what actually works in your specific Shopify setup.
Phase 2. Implementing Shopify SEO
Implementation is the hardest part of any SEO project. We structure the project so the actions are easy to carry out, usually through your existing agile processes. Every completed action gets checked – up to 20% of items contain errors, and in e-commerce, mistakes cost you money immediately.
Migrating to or from Shopify without losing Google traffic
A platform switch is the most dangerous moment in any e-commerce site’s SEO history. We protect the migration with an SEO review before the move, preserved URL structures or correct 301 redirects, metadata transfer and an updated sitemap and robots.txt after launch. Read more about site migrations.
How your Shopify store shows up in AI search
More and more product purchases now begin in ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overviews. Structured data, clear product descriptions and content worth quoting help your store get picked up there too. That’s built into how we work – read more about AI SEO.

Frequently asked questions about Shopify SEO
-
What is Shopify SEO?
Shopify SEO is search engine optimization built around the Shopify e-commerce platform. The work covers technology (URL structure, duplicates, load time), content (category and product copy), links and user experience – all with an eye on what you can and can't control in Shopify.
-
Can you do SEO on Shopify?
Yes. Shopify's default settings are decent enough, but the platform's fixed URL structure and reliance on apps mean stores that actively work on SEO clearly outperform those that rely on the defaults. Most things can be optimised — you just need to know where the limits are.
-
Which SEO agency is best for Shopify?
Look for an agency with a track record on Shopify in Swedish projects, one that focuses on implementation rather than just reporting. At Topdog, Shopify stores are part of our wider e-commerce SEO work, and we're happy to be measured against our customer satisfaction.
-
Do I need a Shopify SEO consultant, or can I do it myself?
You can handle the basics yourself: titles, alt text, category copy. An SEO consultant with Shopify experience makes the biggest difference on the technical side — duplicate handling, internal linking, Core Web Vitals – and in prioritising what actually moves sales.
-
Do you build Shopify stores too?
No. We're an SEO agency, not a web agency – we don't build your store, we make sure it gets seen and sells. If you need development work, we're happy to team up with your existing agency or technical team.
-
What does Shopify SEO cost?
It depends on your starting point and ambition. Our e-commerce clients typically invest between SEK 250,000 and SEK 1.5 million a year in SEO. A free SEO audit will give you a clear picture of where your store stands.
